I’VE STARTED FOCUSSING MY ATTENTION ON LOCAL BRANDS, AND THIS IS WHY

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I USED TO LOOK FOR THE MOST AFFORDABLE PRODUCTS AVAILABLE, NOT FOCUSSING ON SUSTAINABILITY OR WHERE IT’S FROM, BUT RATHER ON THE PRICE POINT

Fast forward a few years and my eyes have opened up to the world of supporting local brands and products. I now want to know who the founder is, their story, their vision and where they source from. 

It’s not as much about the price point anymore, but rather the quality and the story behind the product that drives my decision. I want to understand the in-depth story behind the product, brand or service I am buying into. Maybe it’s my communications background that has elevated and highlighted this need for me, but the more I speak to fellow shoppers, the more I have found that they have the same theory and needs when looking for something specific. “I’d rather wait and know what I am investing in than buy the item purely because I want or need it”. Adds my friend, Liezel. 

Where I’ve seen the biggest shift personally, has to be with skincare as well as home decor – focussing on a minimalist approach rather than the need to ‘want’. This was highlighted during the 2020 Black Friday sales that bombarded us both online and in-stores. If I didn’t absolutely need it, I didn’t buy it and I want to believe that my approach to ‘quality over quantity’ is the driving factor behind my shopping mentality. To conclude, I don’t think it’s as much about supporting local brands that is the overarching idea, but rather a new approach of wanting to know where our products actually come from which, in the end,  results in us supporting local brands, products and services.  

We want to know that we have chosen slow-made items, consciously selected or indigenous ingredients, and brands that are making use of local labour. What’s more important is that brands like these tend to resonate with our specific needs as they are already a part of the communities we are a part of. As a shopper, I want more of an intimate brand experience online as well as offline and so engaging with smaller brands also allows me to experience that.
