HAS SPENDING MORE TIME IN OUR HOMES INCREASED THE NEED FOR THEM TO GET SMARTER?

THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A HOME THAT IS AS SMART AS YOU ARE.

“Hey Siri” or “Hi Alexa” are increasingly common phrases. That is because the world is becoming progressively technologically enhanced. It is no new information that “smart” solutions simplify our lives, save us time and can reduce energy and water consumption.

Smart homes connect to a centralised system within your environment and can be used to automate pretty much any device or appliance (that is compliant) within your space. Turn on the lights, close the motorised blinds, control the pool pump, burglar alarm, adjust the thermostat, turn on the air conditioner, play music, you name it. When linked to a centralised system like Amazon’s Alexa, Google Home Assistant, or the free app IFTTT you can control multiple actions with the touch of a button on your smartphone from anywhere, anytime. So, whether working late or out of town on business or sunning yourself on a tropical island (lift travel bans!) you can ensure things at home are running smoothly and well, smartly.

Smart homes can help give you greater peace of mind, control and simplify your life while improving the resale value of your home.

I love living alone, there are many benefits but probably one main downside is getting lonely from time to time. With a smart home assistant however, I never feel alone! The embedded home assistant such as Siri or Alexa can playback music for me, stream podcasts, read social posts and give me updates on the news and weather. ‘She’ can order an Uber, do online shopping (not that I would give up the opportunity for this form of down time), share photos and add fun, quirky captions to Instagram posts, all on command.

If you are anything like me, you’ll relate to the constant sense of lack of time and have a deep concern for the state of the environment. I try to ensure that my everyday habits help offset my carbon footprint. The wonderful thing about a smart home system, and there are many, is that it is estimated that these systems can save us up to 30 mins a day in valuable time and up to $98.30 monthly through energy efficiency savings.

Smart homes have become an everyday reality for modern living. Even new car models come complete with integrated voice assistants, now that is a modern convenience.

Looking to the future, there is plenty to be excited about. Amazon’s senior VP David Limp says their vision for an ambient home is not a command driven one. A true smart home doesn’t just react to commands, it is predictive and proactive in determining what you need, when you need it.
