For most of us, cellulite is one of life’s many inevitabilities. In fact, over 90% of women and 10% of men develop it after the age of 25, to varying degrees. While the body-positivity movement has done a lot to normalize dimpled skin (even the celebs are starting to show theirs off with pride), it is still something many seek to get rid of.
What is cellulite?
Cellulite – which tends to be most prominent in the thigh and bum region – is when fat inside the body is pushed against the tissue surrounding it. This tissue is mesh-like in form, which is what causes the orange-peel effect on the outside of the skin.
Despite what many people think, weight is not the cause of cellulite but rather your genetic make-up. Excess body fat can make the appearance more exaggerated, but even slim people can develop it.
Can you get rid of it?
While there is no definitive way to banish cellulite completely, there are a few things that can be done to minimize it. Working out and doing daily stretches will help by providing support to the connective tissue. It will also help to keep it more elastic.
Another popular option when it comes to treating cellulite is cosmetic procedures, such as laser treatment, which can be done every few months to keep lumpy areas smooth.
There are also ways to tackle cellulite at home. There are topical lotions and creams that can temporarily tighten the skin for a firmer finish. These, however, would need to be applied daily in order to reap the benefits.
